How I Never Wash My Hair (AKA The Best Dry Shampoo)
Since I’ve started coloring my hair red, it pretty much looks like I murdered someone in the bath tub every time I let shampoo hit my overly-processed locks. And while I LOVE my colorist (Michael Angelo at Wonderland Beauty Parlor), I’d rather not pay a visit to the salon every week in order to maintain the superhero like red I’ve grown to love (still waiting for superpowers to penetrate my scalp, FYI).
So, I’ve pretty much stopped washing my hair (in the least gross way possible) in order to maintain the vibrant red hue for longer, extend the time between salon visits and save money â€" both on aforementioned salon visits and, well, shampoo… although I guess I’m making up for it in the insane amount of dry shampoo I use on a regular basis.
Note to self: buy stock in dry shampoo, if that’s even possible (hey, I’m a beauty expert, not a financial advisor!) and plant some trees (because mother earth does not love me right about now… although I guess I am saving water, right?)
Needless to say, I’ve tried (read: used on hair and inadvertently inhaled) almost every dry shampoo on the market. So, here are the 3 (yes I have 3 in my bathroom at all times… sometimes more) that I cannot live without.
How I Never Rarely Wash My Hair (AKA The Best Dry Shampoo)
1. Arrojo ReFINISH Dry Shampoo ($ 22 at arrojoproduct.com)
If you’re looking to add volume to fine hair or just to extend your hair 12-24 hours past your usual shampoo schedule, Arrojo ReFINISH Dry Shampoo instantly revives and refreshes and leaves locks smelling freshly washed, without adding a powdery, matte finish (which most dry shampoos do). It also is clear (yes, really!) so you don’t need to worry about anyone seeing it. It does not, however, absorb serious oil, so it’s best kept to hair that needs some freshening up, rather than strands dealing with their own version of an oil spill.
2. Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo ($ 24 at beauty.com)
If you’re only going to buy one dry shampoo, this should be it. I swear, it can take hair from oh-wait-I’m-almost-a-real-hippie (and not in the trendy way) to clean and chic with just a few sprays directly on your scalp. The only negative is that it does have a powdery finish, so it’s essential to spray, let dry and then vigorously massage scalp to remove residue. When I’m really (and I mean really) pushing the limits of my shampoo-boycott, I also spray this throughout the lengths of my hair to at least give a uniformly matte look, which I’ve actually grown to love.
3. Psssssst Dry Shampoo ($ 6.99 at drugstore.com)
When I’m in a bind (aka I’ve run out of Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo or just don’t want to stomach spending another $ 24), Psssssst Dry Shampoo does the trick. It’s cheap and gets the job done, without any frills. There’s no pretty scent (but a mist of my beloved Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia Cologne takes care of that) and it’s a bit less workable than either Arrojo ReFINISH Dry Shampoo or Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo but, hey, it gets the job done!
