Can Clinique’s 3-step stop Acne?

Article by Vanessa Reece

Clinique has had a long standing reputation for clearing up various skin complaints with their Allergy Tested, 100% fragrance free range for many years.

The core of their range is the 3-step which has helped many people stop acne in its tracks. But is the 3-step for everyone who has acne? In this article I lift the lid on how to use and how not to.

The 3-step consists of soap, exfoliation liquid and moisturizer. Many acne sufferers are put off by the either the soap or the moisturizer, mainly due to the fact they feel they shouldn't apply more oil to the skin.

Conversely, the exfoliation liquid has been known in some cases to over dry the skin or make acne worse. So why is this?

The 3-step comes in various strengths depending on your skin type and this where most people go wrong. They simply 'guess' what their skin type is. Just because you have acne doesn't mean to say you have oily skin.

It's best to go to a Clinique counter and have a full consultation with the consultant so she can ask you various questions which will determine your true skin type. And be aware that a skin type can change due to seasons, so you it's always best to go back for a follow-up consultation after about four to six weeks to see if your skin has changed.

The consultant will be able to ask you as well how you're removing make-up in the evening and if there are any other products you are using that could effect your skin condition.

Clinique launched their moisturizing gel some years ago and this is exactly the same as their traditional 3-step moisturizer. If you and the consultant feel you're best with an oil free version of the moisturizer then this is what you should use.

Regardless of what type of 3-step you get; you should follow the directions carefully, and this is where many people tend to go wrong when they use the 3-step. They 'overuse' the products which means the skin doesn't feel the full benefits and it can lead to the acne getting even worse.

If you're using the 3-step in the evening you must remove all make-up with a proper make-up cleanser. You should then wash the skin with the 3-step soap you've been given. Washing the soap off thoroughly is important because you don't want any residue left on the skin at all.

Next apply one to two tabs of exfoliating liquid (either mild, two, three, or four) to a clean cotton wool pad and sweep it gently once across the skin, avoiding eyes. The exfoliation liquid can lead to an over production of sebum if overused to it's very important you use it sparingly.

Next, apply the moisturizer (either lotion or gel) in areas your skin generally feels non-oily (or comfortable.)

In the first week or so you may see more outbreak. This is nothing to worry about, unless the skin has a reaction where the skin is very sore or itchy. Generally, because of the exfoliation process, impurities rise to the top layer of the der mis so they can be expelled. So you may see your acne get worse before it gets better.

If you feel you've had a reaction to the product you should return to the consultant to discuss it.

The 3-step can stop acne in many cases but it needs to be used correctly and it also needs time to do its work. Other factors of course come into play, like good diet and exercise.

If you want to try the 3-step for free before you purchase, to see if it can clear your acne, then visit a Clinique counter. Many times they will give you a consultation and offer you samples.

I hope you find a solution.
